7.5% VAT: Nigerians Reacts As Telcos Increase Charges For Data, SMS and Phone Calls

In what may look like a “surprise package” to many Nigeria after realizing that telecommunications companies are now including the new value-added tax rate on every phone call or send a Short Message Service, SMS and data services.

Many Nigerians have as usual taken to the popular micro-blogging platform Twitter to drop their “two cents” by sharing screenshots of the notifications they received from their telecom service providers to the effect of the new VAT charges. Twitter user – @ayemojubar, sent a text message and observed that she was charged N4.10kobo instead of N4.

The Federal Government had in September 2019, announced plans to review the VAT through consultations at various levels in the country. The minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed, made this known to journalists at the State House after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, September 11.
