Mobile operators now charge 7.5% VAT on all Calls, SMS and Data

Following the implementation of the new 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) by the Nigerian Government that kicked off on February 1, 2020, mobile operators have started to charge it’s subscriber the new 7.5% on all calls, SMS and data services.

Earlier last year, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the finance bill 2019 into law, with an increase of the Value Added Tax from 5% to 7.5%.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have notified Nigerians on the application of the new VAT rate on all purchased telecommunication products and services with effect from 1st of February 2020.

According to ALTON, purchases of telecommunication products and services will be affected by the implementation of the VAT increase.

ALTON said the VAT increase would reflect on the charges of phone calls, text messages and data for internet in Nigeria.

This means that the cost of phone calls, text messages, and data services in Nigeria will reflect the new VAT increasement and it seems that have kicked off earlier today has some subscribers are now being charged with the new VAT rate.
