iPhones are very expensive in India reason being high import tariffs. To solve the problem, Apple started manufacturing the iPhone 6s. It is being manufactured at the Bengaluru facility of Winston. The iPhone SE had earlier started production in the same location in India.
Apple will still continue to import the iPhone 6s units for a while longer until capacity can meet demand. The “made in India” units should be available in stores very soon, a company executive stated, though the price is still unknown at this time.
The company is also looking into adding more iPhone models to their list of locally-made devices on a trial production bases. The previous trial runs started in April and covered the iPhone 6 and 6s generations including the iPhone SE, with iPhone SE accounting for 15%.
Increase on import tariffs (import duty on smartphones was set to 20% in February) has contributed to Apple losing ground in the premium segment, which is currently lead by Samsung and OnePlus with the company in third place. This move is targeted at recovering that and also increasing device sales.
