You don’t need to be told that there is deadly recession in the country. In fact our Telco operators are seriously feeling the heat of the recession. In the pass few months, we have seen how they have dramatically increased their cost of services. Things that used to be free are no longer free like the MTN share and sell service and others.
Telecoms operators also said that international calls made up a critical part of their revenue because of Nigeria’s large expatriate and Diaspora population. But right now, subscribers have opted for alternative to international calls by using Skype, WhatsApp call, Facebook Video calls etc and its drastically affecting their revenue.
Blocking this features on the messenger apps would let them recover some of their losses and “earn up to N20tn and N30tn, or so, by the end of 2018”.
Telcos operators also blamed the Nigerian Communications Commission for not properly regulating the sector in order to protect and keep them in business.
But reacting to the development, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr . Tony Ojobo, said , “ We don’ t have any evidence of that. We do not regulate the Internet.”
